Lot Essay

This watch, as part of the ‘scrimshaw’ collection, is dedicated to the ancient craft of ivory painting. Given that ivory is rightfully strictly prohibited, Piaget went to extreme lengths to be able to accurately pay tribute to this metier by sourcing fossilized mammoth ivory for its very limited run of watches.

Samarkand, as a key city on the ancient silk route, would have seen plenty of ivory traffic, so the design and material of this piece come together perfectly to resurrect the romance of this mythical watchmaking journey.

The falcon-dial Altiplano champions the majestic raptor of the sand seas and is so well drawn as to capture the fierceness of the bird’s gaze and the texture of its deeply feathered breast. The roseate hue of the pink-gold case calls to mind the shimmering aridity of the region and emphasizes the warmth of the ivory.
