Rolex produced the Ref. 1665 Sea-Dweller from 1967 to 1983, it was the first watch from the brand designed specifically for saturation diving. The experimental early 1665 models had “patent pending” engraved on the caseback. This is a Mk1 dial, the rarest of the lot – the words SUBMARINER and SEA-DWELLER are printed in the same font and the colour fades to white from red via pink and yellow. The S of the SEA-DWELLER is also aligned perfectly with the B of the SUBMARINER. The bracelet (stamped 9315) and end-links (285) are period-correct for this particular model. Though this watch is powered by the self-winding Cal. 1575, the rotor is stamped 1570, another quirk of the early 1665 models.

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
OVERALL CONDITION: The overall condition is good, considering its age.
DIAL: The dial is nice, original, and period-correct. The lume plots do not react to UV light, as should be the case. There is a mark on the dial near the 59th minute.
CASE: There are surface scratches that suggest that this watch was well-worn. The last three digits of the serial (case) number are stamped on the inside caseback.
MOVEMENT: Ticking at the time of cataloguing and all functions are working. However, a service is recommended.
BRACELET: The bracelet (stamped 9315) and end-links (285) are period-correct for this particular model.
