ROLEX, A STEEL OYSTER PERPETUAL SUBMARINER “BIG CROWN”, REF. 5510
In production for one year only, 1958, Ref. 5510 is one of the rarest "big crown" Submariners, and among the most sought-after Rolex sports watches. It is believed that only 300 were made in its one year of production. Pay attention to the gilt print on the dial that's turned a toasty orange over time, a characteristic of watches made in this reference. The first "big crown" Submariner was the Ref. 6538 and was introduced in 1958 and the Ref. 5510 inherits the same case as its predecessor. This Rolex was characterised by its black lacquer "Swiss"-signed dial and its 8 mm. "big" crown and lack of crown guards. The "Big Crown" Ref. 6538 is best known for being the watch spotted on Sean Connery's James Bond in the film Dr. No (1962).
