Lot Essay

Independent watchmaker Stepan Sarapaneva introduced this limited edition wristwatch in 2021 to pay homage to the loveable Swedish comic strip Moomin created by Tove Jansson that celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2020. The dial is inspired by a Jansson’s illustration in the book Moominsummer Madness (1954) and in the original illustration, Moomintroll is seen dreaming among reeds on a summer day.

Sarapaneva made the watch in a limited edition of four sets of 25 pieces each with hands in steel rhodium, flamed blue, red gold, and pitch black. The reeds depicted on the dial are hand-painted with SuperLuminova in various colours that really bring the dial to life when exposed to UV light.

Visible via the caseback, the self-winding rotor features the trademark skeletonised moon-face with luminous eyes. Quirky and collectible, this watch is being offered fresh to the market and is in excellent condition.
