Lot Essay

According to the Archives of Vacheron Constantin, the present watch with 17''' keywound cylinder escapement was manufactured in 1834.

Its case is finely engraved with gold foliate and scrollwork against a black champlevé enamel background.

Translated from the French, Champlevé – champ levé – meaning raised field, champlevé is an enamel process where the surface to be enameled is carved, engraved, stamped or etched with a design prior to enameling. The powdered enamel is fired into the design highlighting it.
