Lot Essay

Featuring the day, date and a power reserve, the ‘Jubilee 1755’ has already become part of Vacheron Constantin’s illustrious history and a highly desirable modern icon. The present example represents number 160 in a limited series of 252 pieces produced in platinum to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the company in 2005. Similarly, 501 examples were each produced in 18K yellow, white and pink gold as well.

The combined number of watches produced in all four metals is the sum of 1755, corresponding directly to the year in which Vacheron Constantin was founded. For the 250th anniversary, in a departure from protocol, the Geneva authorities allowed the Geneva Seal emblem to be displayed on the dial. This unique permission has added a further layer of mystique and gravity to the anniversary timepieces.

Vacheron Constantin is the oldest watch brand in continuous operation. In 2005, the company celebrated its 250th anniversary, something that no other watch brand has equalled. The Jubilee 1755 model was created as one of the key models for the 250th anniversary celebration. Naturally, for these special anniversary watches all the company’s efforts were concentrated on producing the best in design and finish.

The ‘flagship’ of the celebrations was the legendary ‘Tour de l’Ile’, then the most complicated wristwatch in the world with 16 complications. The anniversary series was given a specific DNA which carried through the range. The specially shaped lugs, beautiful guilloché dial and half frosted, half polished hands inspired by a Vacheron Constantin watch of 1926. In addition, the movement, caliber 2475, was Vacheron Constantin’s first in-house automatic movement. With 27 jewels, glucydur balance adjusted to five positions and 22 carat gold rotor, the level of finish is exceptional.
