Lot Essay

This white gold Saxonia ultra-thin time-only wristwatch with scintillating Lange ‘gold flux’ glass dial can only be described as stunning.

Focusing on the primary functions of the mechanical timepiece, the hours and minutes, it features a dial made of silver which forms the base of the beautiful dial. Called ‘gold flux’ by Lange, the glass surface with its subtle yet mesmerizing sparkle is achieved by the inclusion of copper and other materials, a technique mastered by Murano glassblowers. To create the sparkling effect, the glassmakers introduce copper oxide while the glass is being heated, which in turn crystallises as the mixture cools off. The dial is completed by twelve solid gold indexes that are then applied to the gold flux glass surface.

Sized at very wearable 39 mm., the largest timepiece of the ‘Saxonia Thin’ range, the case has a glazed display back to view the sheer beauty and finish of the movement. The movement, as expected from Lange, has been finished to an exceptional standard. For example, the anglage is hand-done and although a ‘simple’ movement it includes a traditional free-sprung balance with screws, a feature that is found on very few modern wristwatches and clearly demonstrates Lange’s supremacy in attention to detail and faultless craftsmanship with a distinct nod to the company’s heritage.

The hard to obtain white gold Saxonia ultra-thin with gold flux dial showcases Lange & Söhne’s watchmaking at its very best and the present watch offers collectors the chance to obtain without delay an undoubted contemporary icon of the brand in exceptional condition.
