Lot Essay

Originally launched in 1983, Audemars Piguet reference 5554 was the first Royal Oak to feature a perpetual calendar. Limited to 279 examples, the timepiece was exceedingly rare and desirable, quickly leading to the production of numerous successor references.

Years later in 1989, the Royal Oak Quantieme Perpetual reference 25686 was launched. The total series production consisted of 233 examples and of this, only 70 pieces were crafted in 18k yellow gold, such as seen in the present example. The timepiece was also one of the first Royal Oak Quantieme Perpetual watches to exhibit a sapphire caseback. This allowed for visibility of the beautiful ultrathin caliber 2120/2800, which features a hand engraved 21k rotor, a joyous rarity to admire.

Reference 25686 came in a large assortment of dial colors, arrangements, and metals, making the present lot with a matte white roman dial and an 18k yellow gold construction, an exceedingly rare timepiece. The watch deserves to be cherished by any Royal Oak aficionado and proposes an excellent addition to any serious collection.
