Lot Essay

Produced in limited editions of only 6 pieces each in stainless steel, white gold, and pink gold, the Christiaan van der Klaauw Planetarium ‘Dunes of Mars’ celebrates the mystery and allure of the red planet. With a captivating red aventurine glass dial representing the red sandy surface of Mars, sensationally, this white gold wristwatch houses the World’s smallest mechanical planetarium. Situated in the lower half of the dial, it displays the real-time orbits of six planets around the sun. Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Saturn, and Jupiter. Mercury being the fastest, making a full rotation in 87.97 days, while it takes Saturn 29.46 years to do the same. The CVDK Planetarium complication was a winner of the most prestigious watch award in the world, the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG).

In the upper half of the dial are concentric chapter rings for the date and months, applied Roman numerals and the distinctive CVDK 12-pointed sun emblem in place of the 12 o’clock numeral. The 40 mm. case not only perfectly frames the dial, but also displays the movement through the sapphire crystal back. The automatic twin-barrel movement Caliber CVDK7386 is impressive, powering the complex planetarium complication yet still capable of a power reserve of up to 96 hours. The winding rotor is decorated with stars, planets, and the CVDK sun logo.
