Lot Essay

The present work has previously been given to Jean-Francois Millet the Younger (1666-1723), a painter chiefly known for his landscapes influenced by the work of Nicolas Poussin and Gaspard Dughet. This picture appears to have been painted later, around 1800. It probably does not depict an existing sarcophagus, but is more likely an imaginary depiction of a sacrifice.
