Rectangular with rounded corners, decorated with engine-turned wave pattern framed by a border of laurel buds and pilasters, the lid chased in relief with foliate scrolls on a matted ground, the central medallion enamelled with flowers within a pearl frame, the movement activated by a push-button to the front panel, opening to reveal a swivelling and singing bird with feathers in blue, green, and yellow hues, with an ivorine beak, the plate chased with a bird on a geometric trellis, the back with hinged key compartment, keyhole on underside, with later key, marked in cover of key compartment

This box is stylistically comparable to one sold at Dorotheum in Salzburg,16 November 2016, lot 604 and another sold at Christie's, Paris, in the Bayreuth Collection, 22 November 2023, lot 83.
François-Elisée, Frédéric and Samuel-Henri Rochat worked in Geneva from 1800 to 1835. They trained in their father's workshop Pierre Rochat in Le Brassus, then worked as watchmakers at Jaquet-Droz and Leschot before setting their own business in Geneva. They became one of the largest manufacturers of singing bird movements and automata watches which they also supply to other manufacturers, notably Jaquet-Droz and Leschot. They are best known for having perfected the singing bird movement by adding more cams, thus making the bird's movements more natural, and for improving sound quality through the use of piston rods.
Their boxes were often enhanced with pearls and precious stones and decorated with enameled scenes created by famous artists such as Isaac Adam, Jean-Abraham Lissignol, Jean-François-Victor Dupont and Jean-Louis Richter. Among their most famous pieces are a pair of singing bird guns sold at Christie's in Hong Kong, on May 20, 2011, lot 2174 and a birdcage with singing bird including that of the Duke of Sussex sold at Christie's London on December 13 2000, lot 87.

Cette boîte à oiseau chanteur est à rapprocher stylistiquement d'une boîte vendue chez Dorotheum à Salzburg, le 16 novembre 2016, lot 604 et d'une autre vendue chez Christie's à Paris dans la Collection Bayreuth le 22 novembre 2023, lot 83, toutes deux aussi par les Frères Rochat.
François-Elisée, Frédéric et Samuel-Henri Rochat ont travaillé à Genève de 1800 à 1835. Après un apprentissage dans l’atelier de leur père Pierre Rochat au Brassus, puis comme horlogers chez Jaquet-Droz et Leschot, ils s'installent à leur compte à Genève pour devenir l’un des plus grands fabricants de mouvements d'oiseaux chanteurs et de montres à automates qu'ils fournissent également à d'autres fabricants, notamment Jaquet-Droz et Leschot. Ils sont connus pour avoir perfectionné le mécanisme de l'oiseau chanteur pour rendre les mouvements de l'oiseau plus naturels, et pour avoir amélioré la qualité du son grâce à l'utilisation de tiges de piston.
Leur boîtes étaient généralement serties de perles et décorées de scènes émaillées souvent réalisées par des artistes célèbres tels qu'Isaac Adam, Jean-Abraham Lissignol, Jean-François- Victor Dupont et Jean-Louis Richter.
