EINSTEIN, Albert (1879–1955). “Näherungsweise Integration der Feldgleichungen der Gravitation”. In: Sitzungsberichte der Königlich preussischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, vol. 32/33, pp. 688–96. Berlin, 1916. [With:] “Über Gravitationswellen”. In: Sitzungsberichte der Königlich preussischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, vol. 6/7/8, pp. 154–67. Berlin, 1918.

Rare first printings of Einstein's two visionary papers of the existence of gravitational waves, both in original wrappers. The first work was Einstein’s first paper on gravitational waves, predicting the existence of ripples in space-time caused by massive accelerating objects like colliding black holes, supernovae and even the Big Bang. The second paper corrects a calculation error in the first paper and derives the quadrupole formula for gravitational wave emission. Proof of gravitational waves’ existence was not discovered until 1974, when the Arecibo Radio Observatory allowed astronomers to measure a binary pulsar over the course of eight years, confirming Einstein's proposal. In 2015, LIGO (the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory) was able to physically sense undulations in space time caused by colliding black holes for the first time.

Two volumes, quarto (265 × 183mm). (Second work leaves uncut). Original orange wrappers (second work spine split between quires 13 and 14).
