The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas, stretcher and attachments appear to be in generally good condition. There are some slight deformations to the canvas, most visible to the upper half of the canvas. There is a discoloured varnish layer with viscous drips. There is an embedded layer of surface dust. There is rubbing with associated paint loss to the corners and edges. There are scattered clusters of craquelure with associated small paint losses. There are some raised cracks to the white passages in the centre of the composition which appear stable. There are some further raised cracks to the lower left quadrant with associated lifting and paint loss. There are some drying cracks to the dark red passage in the lower right quadrant. When examined under ultraviolet light, there appears to be no evidence of retouching. Subject to the foregoing, it is our view that the work is in fair condition and would benefit from cleaning and stabilisation.
