The panel is held under tension with a cradle on the reverse and remains stable. Retouching is visible throughout the background and along the two horizontal panel joins, each of which runs through the faces of the Virgin and Child (visible in the illustration), and along the edges of the panel, associated with frame wear, with some associated paint loss. There is further scattered retouching in the flesh tones, such as the lower half of the Christ Child’s face. Ultraviolet examination is impaired by a thick layer of varnish.
