Lot Essay

The present pocket watch was part of a set of timepieces ordered by the Ministry of Imperial Court commemorating the Iranian 'White Revolution', a series of reforms resulting in aggressive modernisation in the Imperial State of Iran launched on 26 January 1963 by the Shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.

It was presented to Mr. Abdul-Monem Rifai, the then Jordanian Ambassador to Iran. A prominent political figure, Rifai would go on to become the Prime Minister of Jordan in 1969. Incidentally, he is also credited with writing the lyrics of the Jordanian National Anthem.

In the late 1970s, Rifai handed over the present pocketwatch to his daughter with instructions to pass it on her daughter (Mr. Rifai's granddaughter) as "a keepsake from him". Cherished over decades, the watch is now being consigned to the auction for the very first time.
