Lot Essay

According to Gustav Schiefler, Kirchner created his woodcut as a title image for the periodical Zeit im Bild. It was however rejected and never printed in an edition.
All other known impressions are now in public collections (Städel Museum, Frankfurt am Main; Staatliche Kunsthalle, Karlsruhe; Gore Rifkind Center, County Museum of Art, Los Angeles; Buchheim Museum, Bernried).
