Lot Essay

The Portuguese Grande Complication in pink gold was made in a limited edition of only 50 pieces per year. The present example, no. 09, is from the 2011 edition. It appears to be in new old stock condition, still retaining the IWC protective sticker to the case back, and is sold with the full set of accessories. The strap of this exclusive timepiece is stitched with pink gold thread.

The Portuguese Grande Complication is one of IWC’s most famous models, uniting a wealth of watchmaking’s most outstanding achievements. These include a perpetual calendar that is mechanically programmed until 2499 (it requires just three adjustments in the non-leap years 2100, 2200 and 2300) as well as a perpetual moon phase display and a chronograph. When activated by the repeating slide, the minute repeater chimes the precise time in harmonious tones.

A globe of the world discreetly engraved with lines of latitude and longitude provides a background to the silver-plated dial. On the case back, an intricate engraving of a sextant, which together with the watch has been an indispensable aid to marine navigation, is an unequivocal sign that the watch is part of the Portuguese watch family.

The automatic calibre 79091 comprises 659 components, it incorporates a hacking feature for the subsidiary seconds and provides a power reserve of 44 hours.
