A PARCEL-GILT SILVER LARGE POMANDER
PROBABLY HOLLAND, CIRCA 1660
On an openwork spreading foot decorated with flowerheads, the base pierced with radiating fluting; the globular body formed of six hinged segments, five engraved with fruit festoons with bird above, one also bearing the monogram “SB” in a shield held by a bird, the final segment engraved with a vacant shield surmounted by a knight’s helmet with a bird of prey below; the central baluster-form finial unscrewing and fitted with a small spoon; inside each segment engraved with fruit swags, the sliding covers with ball finial and engraved with an initial between A and F repeated on the central stem, apparently unmarked

The term pomander derives from the French 'pomme d’ambre' and refers to a spice holder or perfume container. Often worn suspended from a belt alongside a chatelaine and other small accessories, it was used to ward off unpleasant odors and thereby protect against infection.
The engraved iconography reflects the seventeenth-century taste for fruit and floral compositions which, beyond their decorative value, were above all laden with symbolic meaning. This style of painting was especially popular in the Netherlands and Flanders, where it was generally commissioned by a wealthy mercantile bourgeoisie.
The engraving, remarkable for both its refinement and richness, appears to have been inspired by prints attributed to Dietrich Krüger (also known as Theodor Krüger, c. 1575–1624) a Hamburg born copper engraver and illustrator of the late Renaissance period, active primarily in Nuremberg.

Le terme pomander est dérivé du français pomme d'ambre et décrit un porte-épice ou porte-parfum. Souvent accrochés à la ceinture des femmes avec leur châtelaine et autres petits accessoires, il servait à éloigner les mauvaises odeurs et à se protéger ainsi des infections.

L’iconographie gravée rappelle les compositions de fruits et florales du XVIIe siècle qui au-delà de leur valeur décorative étaient avant tout chargées de symboles. Ce style de peinture était particulièrement populaire aux Pays-Bas et dans les Flandres généralement commandé par une riche bourgeoisie marchande.
Le décor gravé d’une grande finesse et richesse semble inspiré des gravures attribuées à Dietrich Krüger (aussi connu sous le nom de Theodor Krüger c. 1575–1624). Né à Hambourg, Krüger était un graveur sur cuivre et illustrateur allemand de la fin de la Renaissance, actif principalement à Nuremberg.
