Lot Essay

Born in Chicago in 1883, Jessie Arms Botke studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and later worked designing tapestries at Herter Looms, a textile firm in New York. Botke subsequently moved to California in 1919, eventually settling in Santa Paula in 1927, where she established her studio. Renowned for her intricate, decorative paintings of birds and flowers, Botke also completed murals and woodblock prints throughout her career. Her work is in numerous museum collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois, and the Santa Paula Art Museum, California.
