Lot Essay

This drawing is an alternate version of the image that Sendak used for his personal bookplate. Sendak kept an image of Jennie with him in his studio throughout his career. “Pride of place above his light table was given to a picture from Sendak’s own Higglety Pigglety Pop! Or, There Must Be More to Life of Jennie, Sendak’s beloved Sealyham terrier. It was the only one of his own pictures that he consistently kept up in his Ridgefield studio until he died, and he insisted that it was his favorite book.” (Wild Things Are Happening: The Art of Maurice Sendak, p. 19).
