The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This canvas is lined and taut on a keyed trainer. The paint surface is stable. Inspection in natural light shows scuffing and losses are visible along the extreme edges. There is a larger loss in the lower right edge and a small loss in the background at center right, both of which has been filled with wax. Further small, unrestored losses are scattered across the surface, with the red ground revealed in certain areas such as the sitter’s nose, forehead, in the yellow of his proper left collar, and in the background. The background and collar in the lower right corner fluoresce under ultraviolet light. The painting could benefit from restoration, but can be hung in its present state.
