Sendak created A Christmas Mystery as a special picture story for Family Circle Magazine's December 1971 issue. The Santa Clause mountain image was also the subject of a puzzle based on A Christmas Mystery, and remains one of a select few Christmas-themed illustrations by Sendak alongside his work on Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker.
