The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas has been relined and is providing adequate support for the picture. There is a pattern of craquelure to the paint surface, and an aged, discoloured varnish. There are some white marks on the surface (as visible in the catalogue illustration). On close inspection, there are some tiny losses, notably to the left and right of Titian‘s head and to the red costume (in the upper half), as well as a few tiny losses to the lower right edge. These losses may be due to paint lifting in the past, and the picture’s lining may need to be addressed to prevent further losses in the future. The examination under UV reveals some scattered retouching to the background, possibly to address abrasion or loss, and to the faces, but a more thorough examination is impeded by the varnish.
