Lot Essay

Sendak adapted his works Where the Wild Things Are and Higgelty Piggelty Pop! for the stage as operas with the help of composer Oliver Knussen (1952–2018). The present design depicts the costume for the Lion in Higgelty Piggelty Pop! The role of the Lion was originated by British bass Stephen Richardson with movement by Clive Duncan and George Reid. The two operas premiered as a double bill at the 1985 Glyndebourne Festival.
