The present picture depicts Duncan Grant’s studio at Charleston, Scotland. The far-right edge of the painting shows the decorative fireplace surround made by the artist. The bookcase displays a number of Grant's personal objects, including a framed pastel work of Venice by Simon Bussy, a small brass hand-bell and a small porcelain pot. At left leans a blue and white Persian tile, which has since been stolen from the artist's studio by a member of the public. It was apparently one of Grant's favorite possessions that had been gifted to him by Lady Ottoline Morrell. We are very grateful to Richard Shone for his assistance in preparing this catalogue entry.
