This report was prepared by Hamish Dewar Fine Art Conservation in the Christie's warehouse for the purpose of this sale. UNCONDITIONAL AND WITHOUT PREJUDICE The canvas has been lined onto a secondary canvas and this is ensuring a sound and securesupport. The lined canvas is securely attached to what is evidently the original keyed woodenstretcher. The lined canvas is taut and even. Paint surfaceThe paint surface is also secure. The varnish layers are glossy and uneven and the paintingshould benefit considerably from the removal of the existing varnish layers and revarnishingwhich would ensure a more sympathetic surface coating. Ultraviolet light also highlightsscattered retouchings, many of which appear to be larger and more numerous than is reallynecessary and could be reduced with more minimal inpainting where found to be required.I could see no evidence of any significant repairs. SummaryThe painting would therefore appear to be in essentially very good and stable condition andshould respond well to cleaning and revarnishing and the removal of the existing retouchingsand varnish layers.
