A BRONZE GROUP OF THESEUS AND THE CENTAUR BIENOR, ANTOINE-LOUIS BARYE (1796–1875)

The second and final mythological work by Antoine-Louis Barye, Theseus Fighting the Centaur Bienor is inspired by passages from Book XII of the Metamorphoses by Ovid, as well as by the marble Hercules Killing Nessus sculpted in 1594 by Giambologna (Loggia dei Lanzi). Barye depicts the young hero pinning down the centaur’s head while preparing to deliver the fatal blow.
He conceived the group in 1849 and exhibited it at the Paris Salon the following year. The bronze was also cast posthumously by Ferdinand Barbedienne in no fewer than four reductions. Our example belongs to one of the most impressive sizes.

Seconde et dernière œuvre mythologique d'Antoine-Louis Barye, Thésée combattant le centaure Biénor s’inspire de passages du Livre XII des Métamorphoses d’Ovide ainsi que du marbre Hercule tuant Nessus sculpté en 1594 par Giambologna (Loggia dei Lanzi, Florence). Barye y représente le jeune héros immobilisant la tête du centaure, tandis qu’il s’apprête à porter le coup fatal.
Il conçoit le groupe en 1849 et l'expose au Salon à Paris l’année suivante. Le bronze fut aussi édité à titre posthume par Ferdinand Barbedienne en pas moins de quatre réductions. Notre exemplaire fait partie des tailles les plus impressionnantes.
