The painting is executed on canvas, which has a firm relining. Historic frame abrasion is visible along the upper edge of the canvas. There is some thinning and subsequent loss of detail to the upper paint glazes, particularly in the darker tones of the background, presumably as a result of the relining. In the upper right-hand corner there is a minor area of slightly raised paint when seen under raking light, presumably associated with previous restoration, which may benefit from consolidation.

Examination under UV light reveals strengthening to the aforementioned darker tones in the background and architecture, as well as minor additional strengthening to the sitter's coat, and some contours of the horse. Minor infill to craquelure is also present, including to the brown tones of the right-hand dog's fur. Above the sitter's left shoulder, above the left-hand dog and in the aforementioned upper right-hand corner there are three additional areas of retouching, perhaps as a result of previous repaired damages. The charming composition remains fully appreciable.
