In the present work, Matisse unites two of his enduring themes of the 1920s—the dancer and the interior. The figure appears both directly and in reflection, her pose doubled and reframed by the surface of the glass. The patterned detail of her costume highlight Matisse’s sustained engagement with textiles as both motif and structure, reinforcing the interplay between figure and decorative setting.
