Founded in 1735 by George Wickes, Garrard is the oldest jewellery house in London still in operation. Originally, Wickes, a renowned silversmith, distinguished himself through his expertise in fine silverwork. His successors, first the Wakelin brothers and later Robert Garrard, gradually expanded this craftsmanship towards high jewellery, transforming the workshop into a true house dedicated to precious creations.
In 1843, Garrard was granted the prestigious title of Crown Jeweller by Queen Victoria, becoming responsible for the creation, maintenance, and conservation of the British Crown Jewels. For more than 160 years, the house held this central role, contributing to the splendour of royal ceremonies and building an international reputation grounded in excellence and tradition.
In 2007, this historic title came to an end: the care of the Crown Jewels was entrusted to Mappin & Webb. Nevertheless, despite this transition, Garrard remains deeply associated with the British monarchy in the public imagination, standing as an enduring symbol of royal splendour and refinement.
