On spreading base, the hexafoil lobed bombe-shaped body, the screw off cover with hinged scroll ring handle, the lobes finely engraved with three Old Testament scenes, Abraham and the messengers, Lot and his daughters and the drunkenness of Noah, with engraved flowers between, chased above with small buds, the screw top engraved with a band of flowers and centred by a hinged scroll handle, apparently unmarked

The dominant theme of the scenes engraved on three sides of this box is that of drinking and drunkenness. The iconography can be linked to engravings from the late 16th and early 17th centuries of Dutch, Flemish, and German origin, demonstrating the mobility of these prints, which served as models for goldsmiths across Europe.

Thus, the scene of Lot and his daughters can be compared to engravings by Pieter van der Borcht II (1545–1608), active in Antwerp, or Hendrick Goltzius (1558–1617), active in Haarlem.
The scene depicting Abraham and the three messengers is based on an engraving by Matthäus Merian the Elder (1593–1650), born in Switzerland but active in Frankfurt (see illustration).
Finally, the treatment of the flowers and their variety, with the tulip as the dominant motif, recalls the engravings of Crispijn van de Passe (1594/95–1670), born in Cologne but active, along with his siblings, also engravers, in the Netherlands.

Although the iconography does not allow us to definitively identify the place of manufacture of this box, the use of engraved rather than chased or repoussé decoration suggests that the object was likely made in northern Germany, where such a more austere decorative style was preferred over those used in southern Germany.

Le thème dominant des scènes de l'Ancien Testament gravées sur trois des côtés de cette boîte est celui de la boisson et de l'ivresse. L'iconographie est à rapprocher des gravures de la fin du XVIe-début du XVIIe siècle d'origine hollandaise, flamande et allemande, prouvant la mobilité de ces gravures qui servaient de modèles aux orfèvres de toute l'Europe.

Ainsi la scène de Loth et ses filles est à comparer avec les gravures de Pieter van der Borcht II (1545-1608) actif à Anvers ou encore d'Hendrick Goltzius (1558-1617) actif à Haarlem.
La scène figurant Abraham et les trois messagers est réalisée d'après une gravure de Matthaüs I Merian (1593-1650) né en Suisse mais actif à Frankfurt (voir illustration).
Enfin le traitement des fleurs ainsi que leur variété, dominée par la tulipe, rappelle les gravures de Crispijn van de Passe (1594/95-1670) né à Cologne mais actif, avec ses frères et sœurs aussi graveurs, aux Pays-Bas.

Bien que l'iconographie ne nous permette pas de confirmer avec certitude le lieu de fabrication de cette boîte, combinée au choix d'un décor gravé plutôt que ciselé ou repoussé suggèrent que cet objet a probablement été fabriqué dans le nord de l'Allemagne où l'on préférait ce style de décor plus austère que ceux utilisés en Allemagne du sud.
