The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The painting is executed on canvas, which has been relined and is held under adequate tension. Examination in natural light reveals a partially removed old cloudy varnish, still covering the landscape background. Several more recent discoloured retouchings to damages, repaired tears and historic frame abrasion are visible, including on the centre right (reverse-L shaped repaired tear of circa 8 cm); upper left, (a vertical repaired tear of circa 10 cm); and through the sitter's right shoulder (a vertical repaired tear of circa 25 cm). Abrasion to the darker blue tones of the drapery has been strengthened.
Examination under UV confirms the above and reveals additional scattered retouching and strengthening to the background. Further restoration is to be presumed beneath the old varnish. There is very minor infill present to craquelure in the sitter's face, which otherwise appears to be well-preserved.
