The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvases have been relined and retain tension on their stretchers. The paint surfaces are stable although somewhat flattened as a result of the relining treatments; the varnish layers are even and clear. Examination of each canvas under UV light is partially obscured by the varnish layers, but confirms the observations below. It further reveals extensive consolidation of the background tones, contour strengthening to the sitters’ features and costumes and scattered infillings to the craquelure. Overall the paintings present very well and can be hung in their present states.
Lot 30 - some old minor scattered paint losses have been filled in and are discernible under a strong white light; these are confirmed under UV light.
Lot 31 - nothing additional to note.
Lot 32 - some impressions of the old stretcher bars are faintly visible in the craquelure in natural light, with some associated retouchings and an area of retouching in the sitter’s collar; these are confirmed under UV light.
Lot 33 - there are a couple of old well-repaired damages in the grey tones at lower centre, which are virtually indiscernible in natural light; these are confirmed under UV light.
