Lot Essay

The opening lines of the Chinese poem Inquiry of a Stork by Hakurakuten (772-846) has been translated in Cynthea Bogel and Israel Goldman, Hiroshige: Birds and Flowers, (New York, 1998), cat. no. 10-11:

The crow fights with the kite over food;
The sparrows dispute over nests.
You stand alone beside the pond
On a windy, snowy evening.
