Lot Essay

NOLA (Green Rain) (also sometimes referred to as 'Yellow Rain') employs a fluorescent greenish-yellow pigment and is one of the most desirable variations of this iconic motif, having been published in a small edition size of 31. The other published editions of NOLA were: White Rain (edition of 289); Grey Rain (edition of 63) and Orange Rain (edition of 32). There were also a total of 66 Artist's Proofs issued in a variety of transitional colours, including NOLA (Green to Blue Rain) sold at Christie's London in July 2021.

The title 'NOLA' is an abbreviation for New Orleans, Louisiana (LA), the city where Banksy's first version of this subject appeared as a stenciled graffiti work in 2008. The image of a girl being drenched by rain that is falling from inside of her umbrella is in reference to the devastating events of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, which had been amplified by failure of the flood defences that had been designed to protect the citizens from such a disaster.
