Oblong with waisted sides, chased with geometrical scrolling motifs on aubergine colour enamel ground on reeded engine-turned motifs, the cover applied with the paste-set initial N, marked on flange: 3rd standard (18 carats) and maker; on cover: guarantee; further stamped on flange with workshop number '152' and engraved with inscription 'Marret et Beaugrand . Louis-François Tronquoy worked between 1827 and 1871 and specialised in presentation boxes. These are rectangular with waisted sides chased with strapwork, and are enamelled in monochromatic colour, usually blue. Heavier than the German presentation boxes, they are set on the cover with a monogram or emblem set in diamonds of varying sizes according to the importance of the recipient. Often as is the case for this box, the diamonds were removed to be sold and replaced by paste.

Louis-François Tronquoy travaille entre 1827 et 1871 et semble s’être spécialisé dans la fabrication des tabatières de présentation. Généralement rectangulaires ciselées sur les côtés d’enroulements, décorées d’un émail monochrome très souvent bleu, d’un poids supérieur à celles fabriquées en Allemagne, elles étaient appliquées sur le couvercle d’un monogramme ou d’armoiries sertis de diamants. Ces diamants dont la taille indiquait le rang de distinction du destinataire, étaient malheureusement souvent remplacés par du verre comme c’est le cas ici.
