The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.

The painting is executed on canvas, which has a firm relining and is held under adequate tension. A slight concave warp to the upper left hand corner is visible from the reverse. An area of wax has been applied to the reverse, at centre, to repair an old tear. Examination in natural light reveals a somewhat compressed paint surface, with shrinkage cracks throughout and associated infill.

Examination under UV light confirms the above, and reveals additional scattered retouching throughout the composition. Retouching to a repaired reverse-C shaped tear running circa 161 cm from the centre left to the boat, lower centre, back to the edge of the composition at left, is visible. Several other repaired tears and damages are present.
