Lot Essay

De Kooning's work underwent a dramatic transformation following his move to East Hampton from New York City in 1963. Gone were the jagged, angular lines inspired by New York City in favor of flowing, organic forms. In pieces like this, we see his work explode with the new colors and freedom he encountered in his new landscape, reflecting a fresh concept of space and light.
