Lot Essay

The international Brazilian artist Vik Muniz is renowned for reconstructing imagery with uncommon materials, such as paper, toys, diamond, refuse, dry pigment, chocolate and sugar. Such ephemeral compositions are then photographed and magnified by the artist. His constructed scenes tap into the history of art, creating scenery that invites the spectator to further investigate his inventive use of materials. Muniz's photographs are extremely detail-oriented and outline the unique characteristics of the material with exquisite elegance. In Red, Orange, Orange on Red, After Mark Rothko (Pictures of Pigment), the artist expresses his ultimate homage to the Abstract Expressionist painter by recreating one of Rothko's works with a complex and accurate arrangement of dry pigment.
