A wonderful example of a neo-vintage Breguet wristwatch, the reference 3040 ‘Serpentine’ is part of the collection of watches that was conceived when Daniel Roth was at the helm of the brand’s watchmaking department.
Roth would go on to form his eponymous watch brand after his stint at Breguet and is now considered among the finest modern watchmakers. The early examples of the 3040 were presented with a gold or silver guilloche dial. Breguet can take credit for bringing back engine-turned dials into modern watchmaking. The classically-sized case, at 36 mm., features the now characteristic coin-edged case and blue cabochon crown. It also features the desirable 'wavy' solid caseback. Nicknamed the ‘Serpentine’ because of the trademark central serpentine date hand, the watch was in production during the 1990s.
It is powered by ultra-thin Cal. 502 QS, which is based on a Frédéric Piguet movement. With a revival of interest in Breguet and a deeper appreciation of Daniel Roth’s mastery, this is a good opportunity to acquire a rare and often overlooked modern Breguet.
