[Escher's] stay in Italy came to an end in 1935; but first Escher made a final tour through Sicily with Haas-Triverio. On 9 May they left Rome by train. From Palermo they travelled through Agrigento and Ragusa to Syracuse. On the way Escher made drawings of windmill at Trapani, the temple ruins of the Greek city of Selinunte, and the weird rocks of Caltabellotta. From Syracuse they took a freighter to Malta, where they stayed for two das. They had plenty of time to draw the harbour at Valletta, with its suburb Senglea and the Verdi, a steamer of the Adria company.
