Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This report was prepared by Simon Parkes Art Conservation Inc.:
This work appears to be clean. The lining is effective. Under ultraviolet light, one can see slight remnants of old varnish here and there, but very few retouches. There is a vertical line about 1 ¼ inches from the edge on the right side; this may correspond to an addition by the artist or a heavier weave in the canvas. There may have been a compositional element, perhaps a figure, between the two vertical tree trunks on the right side that was painted over by the artist, which has subsequently reappeared. There are a few retouches here and perhaps an area of more intense cleaning, which is visible under ultraviolet light. There are no other retouches of any note. It is possible that a few spots on the sleeve of the figure are very slightly over-cleaned, but it is equally likely that this was the artist’s intention. It is recommended that the work be hung in its current condition.
