The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The painting has been executed on canvas, which has a strict relining. The picture presents well in natural light. The surface has been somewhat pressed by the relining, although passages of impasto are still legible in the sky and sitter's dress. Drying cracks above the sitter's right shoulder are present, with associated discoloured infill, and in the darker tones of the landscape centre left and arm and back of the chair. Examination under UV confirms the above and reveals at least two campaigns of restoration, including more recent very delicate infill to craquelure in the sitter's face and costume. An older campaign of infill to the drying cracks is present, as well as retouching to the foliage in the background. The true extent of this retouching is difficult to read under UV because of an older varnish. The painting can be hung as it is, and the lively brushwork remains fully appreciable.
