ANTONIO MARÍA ESQUIVEL Y SUÁREZ DE URBINA, ABRAHAM CASTING OUT HAGAR AND HER SON ISHMAEL, SIGNED AND DATED, OIL ON CANVAS, UNLINED

One of the Spanish Romantics, Antonio María Esquivel (1806-1857) was initially influenced by Murillo (1618-1682). From the Sevillian painter he inherited his somber colouring that lent a certain theatricality to his works. In 1831, Esquivel moved to Madrid, where he first joined the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando before founding his own art school a few years later, the Liceo Artistico e letterario, where he taught anatomy. His knowledge of the human figure is tangible in this painting, which depicts the tragic banishment of Hagar and Ishmael. The three ages of life are depicted with precision, and the painting's fine state of preservation allows the richness of the modelling to be fully appreciated. Nine years later, Esquivel took up the theme of our painting for a composition depicting Hagar and Ishmael in a dramatic scene preceding their rescue by the angel (Gn 16, 6-9), currently on view at the Museo Romántico in Madrid (inv. no. CE-71118).
