MARTIN KNOLLER (1725-1804), PORTRAIT OF A MAN WEARING A HAT, TRADITIONALLY IDENTIFIED AS THE PAINTER ANTON VAN MARON (1773-1808), BUST-LENGTH, OIL ON CANVAS, UNLINED

After studying at the Academy of Vienna, Martin Knoller (1725-1804) continued his training in Italy from the mid-1750s. In Rome, he made the acquaintance of Pompeo Batoni (1708-1787) and Anton Raphaël Mengs (1728-1779), who exerted a considerable influence on his work. Our painting, which probably depicts the painter Anton von Maron (1733-1808), is a fine example of the artists in Mengs's entourage in Rome. Maron, himself a pupil of Mengs, is depicted in an intimate composition with a tight frame reminiscent of Mengs' portraits. The play of light against a uniform background allows Knoller to model the face in the chiaroscuro style so dear to Mengs, whose influence can even be seen in the harmonious colour palette. With his gaze turned towards the viewer and his face marked by a debonair pout, this portrait is a thoughtful tribute from an artist to his contemporary. This painting should be compared with a larger work currently in the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan (inv. no. 503), gifted by Martin Knoller's heirs.
