This auction of Old Master Prints offers a wide variety of woodcuts, engravings and etchings, covering four centuries of European printmaking, from Albrecht Dürer to Francisco de Goya. The sale is led by a magnificent impression of Dürer’s Melencolia I with an exceptionally early provenance dating back to 1602, less than a century after it was created. Other important prints by Dürer include a fine impression of Saint Jerome in his Study from the Collection of Sir Clifford and Lady Curzon, and a very fine and velvety black impression of Saint Eustace. The sale also features several important subjects by Rembrandt van Rijn, including Saint Jerome reading in an Italian Landscape and The Windmill.
Following on from our sale in December 2019, we are delighted to present further works from a private Norwegian collection and from the collection of the Late Professor Eric Stanley, including rare engravings, etchings and chiaroscuro woodcuts of Northern and Italian Mannerism and the School of Fontainebleau by Hendrick Goltzius, Jan Harmensz. Muller, Marco da Ravenna, Antonio da Trento, Giulio Bonasone, and Léon Davent and others. Jean-Etienne Liotard’s mezzotint The small Self-Portrait and The Feast of the Gods by Diana Ghisi add further highlights to this sale of 130 lots. With estimates ranging from £300 to over £150,000, the auction presents an opportunity to acquire some of the most celebrated and intriguing images of western art.
